LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE 2011

Tobacco Free Northeast PA Power of Ten, a youth advocacy program, held their annual Leadership Institute on October 1, 2011. Twenty-four teens and their facilitators, representing all 10 counties of the Northeast Health District, came together to learn more about tobacco prevention, school campus policy and leadership skill-building for work in their communities.

The youth engaged in icebreaker activities through which they became acquainted and had an opportunity to review basic tobacco information. As this year's Institute focused on school policy, the students were asked to review policies on tobacco use, write a strong, comprehensive policy and defend this policy in front of a mock school board. They engaged in lively discussions with members of the mock school board, represented by the facilitators, and learned valuable lessons in leadership and public speaking. They also discussed their own school policies and planned on ways to enforce or strengthen them.

Each year, the P10 youth are also trained on how to participate as part of the retail tobacco enforcement program. Youth are required to be trained prior to going to retail stores to attempt to purchase tobacco products for both PA and the FDA.

BUTT CLEAN UP BY P10 YOUTH FOR GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT FY 2012

On November 3, 2011, P10 youth from Jim Thorpe High School did a butt pickup on school property so they can prove to their school officials that their tobacco policy is not being enforced. The group is working on attending a school board meeting sometime in the next month or so. These youth attended the October 1st Youth Insitute and learned about comprehensive school policy and the need to enforce or strengthen their current policy. The event of Nov. 3rd was a positive example of how they took what they learned and turned it into a valuable lesson for both the students and school officials.

The students at Delaware Valley High School created the oversize models for the Great American Smokeout to show students and staff how tobacco use affects the body in hopes that those who are currently smoking will quit and those who are not smokers will never start. Stinky Ciggy also handed out educational brochures, announcements were read on the school’s public address system and a bulletin board provided more information about the Great American Smokeout 2011.
