QUIT for LOVE

The PA Department of Health Tobacco Prevention Program kicks off its annual Quitline NRT campaign on Monday, February 14, 2011 with a theme of Quit for Love. Callers to the PA Free Quitline will be able to access one month of nicotine replacement therapy along with five free telephone counseling sessions insuring a good start to living a tobacco-free life.
Tobacco continues to be the leading cause of death and disease in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one of every five deaths nationwide is attributed to smoking. Despite Pennsylvania’s Clean Indoor Air Act, secondhand smoke is still making an impact on both youth and adults. More than 858,000 Pennsylvania children are exposed to secondhand smoke at home and 2,190 adult nonsmokers die annually from exposure to secondhand smoke. Quitting protects your family and friends from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. It also may lower the risk of burns, asthma, hearing loss or respiratory infections in children.
Anyone interested in quitting should call the PA Free Quitline to enroll. The counselor and caller will determine if NRT is needed and a 28 day supply will be mailed to the caller. Smokers who want to quit but would prefer to meet with a counselor can call 1-866-974-QUIT (7848) and be referred to a local agency and counselor who provide free NRT and other quit aid medications year round. You can also go to www.tobaccofreene.com to receive this information.
Take advantage of this limited time offer and make the call to 1-800-QUIT NOW. Quit for yourself or a loved one, and quit for good.
